An Evening with Alison Roman

New York Times bestselling author, writer, and cook makes her Opera House debut in the Concert Hall

The Sydney Opera House today announced that New York-based cook, writer, and author Alison Roman will appear live in the Concert Hall to close out her first Australian tour.

Appearing on-stage in conversation with Australian food writer and television host Melissa Leong, this one-night-only event will be a lively conversation about food, friends, and frankness – hot on the heels of Roman releasing her third cookbook, Sweet Enough, in April 2023.

Roman brings an unflappable and authentic style to the role food plays in our lives. Her casual and flexible approach to cooking has captured the attention of loyal followers around the world through her New York Times bestselling cookbooks Nothing Fancy and Dining In, Substack’s most popular food newsletter titled A Newsletter, and YouTube series Home Movies. So iconic are her recipes, they have become known by hashtags: #TheCookies, #ThePasta, #TheDip.

Encouraging a generation to embrace eating in, Roman’s personality is as much a key ingredient in her food as any shallot or anchovy, serving a healthy side of pragmatism and carefree attitude with every spoonful. Her popularity soared as she gave followers an intimate welcome into her home kitchen, reclaiming the ritual of having people over to share a meal. Redefining the domestic goddess by shattering the idea of being the perfect host, Roman’s unmodulated offering is making delicious food that’s best enjoyed in company.

Alison Roman shared her excitement about heading to Sydney, saying: "I was scheduled to come to Australia in March of 2020 but the world had other plans, so I am beyond thrilled to finally make it over. A first time trip to Sydney was already going to be special, but speaking at such a legendary venue as the Opera House is more than I could have dreamed of. I really, truly can't wait."

Sydney Opera House Head of Talks & Ideas, Chip Rolley, says: “It’s an utter pleasure to have Alison Roman join us as part of her first visit to Australia. Alison has a total lack of pretension and a bold try-anything-once attitude, which I think will really resonate with Sydney foodies. With Alison’s wit and assertiveness and Melissa’s insightful questioning, we are guaranteed a great evening in the Concert Hall, full of energy, fun, and sharp observation.”

Alison Roman will also appear as part of the Melbourne Writers Festival and at Brisbane’s Powerhouse. Visit alisoneroman.com for further details.
