School holidays entertainment heats up at the Opera House this summer

Sydney – Monday 29 August, 2022. From book lovers to science fanatics and young music enthusiasts, there’s something for every kid in the Sydney Opera House’s newly-announced summer holiday program. Led by the internationally acclaimed stage adventure Operation Ouch! Live on Stage – Not for the Squeamish (24 – 25 January) in the renewed Concert Hall, the program also features Make Some Noise! by the dynamic comedy duo The Listies (4 – 20 January), and a charming page to stage adaptation of Alison Lester’s summertime classic Are We There Yet? (2 – 22 January). The Opera House’s much-loved free Creative Play program returns with Wild City (3 – 15 January), an ecological workshop from sculptural artist Kathy Holowko.

Alison Lester’s timeless story Are We There Yet? is a new stage adaptation for children aged 3 – 10 that follows eight-year-old Grace and her family’s adventurous and often funny expedition around Australia. Multi-award-winning playwright Finegan Kruckemeyer brings to life a celebration of family, love, and the beauty of Australia – with songs, fun, and quokkas.

Make Some Noise! is a brand new comedy concert by The Listies full of silly songs, stupid sketches and crazy clowning for humans aged 4 – 400. Packed with musical comedy, low-brow gags and stacks of audience participation, this toe-tapping hootenanny for the whole family sees the sultans of silly turning the LOLs up to 11.

Following three sell-out Australian tours and a hit ABC show, TV’s favourite twin doctors Dr Chris and Dr Xand are back with Operation Ouch! Live on Stage - Not for the Squeamish. As the Opera House’s first international production for kids and families since 2020, and the first to welcome families back inside a newly-transformed Concert Hall, the show is packed with all-new crazy experiments and amazing facts, as the doctors explore the fascinating world of biology and the incredible things your body can do.

Sydney Opera House Head of Children, Families and Creative Learning, Tamara Harrison says: “From the burst-out-laughing antics of The Listies, and the heart-warming story of a summer well spent by Alison Lester, to the always-fascinating world of biology with superstar doctors Operation Ouch!, there is something for every child this summer at the Opera House. We are thrilled to welcome the whole family back inside our theatres – beloved family-friendly storytelling and a belly full of laughs awaits.”

Free Creative Play workshops will feature the award-winning installation Wild City by multidisciplinary artist Kathy Holowko. The interactive sessions will invite children to add to the installation by imagining and crafting cityscapes specially adapted to co-inhabit with wildlife. The free creative explorations will be guided by Holowko with ecological experts providing in-depth knowledge about the surprising number of animals we already share our cities with.

The fun continues off-stage with the Junior Adventure Tour, where kids get to be the star and roam through the Opera House to discover how the magic of theatre comes to life. With entertaining games and interactive dress-ups, your little one will finish the day feeling like a Sydney Opera House expert. Need someone else to take on the holiday planning? The Junior Day Pack is an all-inclusive package that combines the Junior Adventure Tour with a souvenir photo, a show ticket to Are We There Yet? followed by a scrumptious harbourside lunch for the ultimate day out.
