Inspired by the unique design genius of architect Jørn Utzon and the Sydney Opera House, get creative through a series of fun and playful design exercises for beginners or design lovers, whilst learning about the architectural history of the Sydney Opera House.

Utzon in the Forest
Saturday 17 August 2024
This workshop is inspired by Jørn Utzon’s love and influence from his local forest in Hellebaek. You will draw inspiration from biophilia design (connecting building occupants more closely to nature), geometry and recent timber and bamboo architecture in Sydney and throughout Asia.
Sails as Sunshades
Saturday 21 September 2024
As Sydney becomes hotter our suburbs will require more shade. In this workshop in groups we will create Urban canopies inspired by Utzon’s love of sailboats and being out on the water. We will consider ecology, the importance of water and shade infrastructure as we reimagine the future of Sydney. This will be an Innovative Materials challenge.
Portfolio Power: Make an Impression

In this special edition of Architecture Club we lead you through the process of preparing and creating a professional visual portfolio. Led by Architecture Club’s Louise O’Brien, students will learn the steps needed for your next creative career move, whether it be Architecture, Visual Communication or Interior Design.
Louise is an architect and educator who has assisted many students in successfully preparing their applications and is joined by Marie Claire graphic designer Juanita Field and architect educator Joanna Nestorosk.
The workshop is suitable for students (year 10 and upwards) who may require a portfolio as part of an application process for University, Tafe or a potential job, but also for anyone who wants to have a go at putting their creative ideas into a professional portfolio format.
Participants will be given a series of activities to get their creative juices flowing and then get to work with the team through each individual portfolio. The day concludes with a short presentation moment for group feedback and suggestions.
Participants will need to bring their computer and camera. Come prepared to create great content and a smashing submission!
Utzon in Motion
Saturday 7 December 2024
Utzon in Motion is a workshop inspired by the Utzon Room and a seminal photograph of Utzon himself which both embody rhythm and time. We will listen to Bach we will create new sculptural forms using colours used in Utzon’s palette.
About the artist
Louise O’Brien
Louise O’Brien is a registered Architect in NSW with qualifications in Installation Art & Interior Design. She is the founder of Apsara Collective – a residential, hospitality and interior architecture studio. She has more than twenty years’ experience locally and internationally. Louise’s passion for design and the opportunities it provides to inspire and empower young people has led her to education and she now lectures at a tertiary level and runs the Architecture for Kids School based in Sydney and Sydney Opera House's regular Architecture Club.

Venue information
Our foyers will be open 90 minutes pre-show for Concert Hall and Joan Sutherland Theatre performances, and two hours pre-show for Western Foyer venue performances. Refreshments will be available for purchase from our theatre bars.
All Sydney Opera House foyers are pram accessible, with lifts to the main and western foyers. The public lift to all foyers is accessible from the corridor near the escalators on the Lower Concourse and also in the Western Foyer via the corridor on the Ground Level (at the top of the escalators). Pram parking will be available outside the theatres in the Western Foyer.
Getting here
The Sydney Opera House Car Park, operated by Wilson Parking, is open and available to use. Wilson Parking offer discounted parking if you book ahead. Please see the Wilson Parking website for details.
Please check the Transport NSW website for the latest advice and information on travel. You can catch public transport (bus, train, ferry) to Circular Quay and enjoy a six min walk to the Opera House.
Frequently asked questions
We advise that you arrive 15 minutes prior to the event. Ticket purchases and collection at our Box Office is discouraged and eTicket or postal delivery methods should be used, wherever possible. However, if you are collecting your tickets from the Box Office, we recommend doing this at least 60 minutes before the event starts.
Prior to the workshop, please notify us if you will need a chair for the session, so we can have those available. Please email accessibility@sydneyoperahouse.com to request a chair or notify our team of any additional needs you may have.
