Punkaliyarra

with Big hART

9 March 2025

Join women from the Pilbara, at the intersection of traditional ecologies and first world economies, as they lead an experiential journey through deep listening, sound, dance and storytelling.

As we seek to strengthen the political voice of First Nations women, Punkaliyarra shares the stories we all need to hear.

Useful information:

A matriarchal knowledge system that spans millennia

An immersive experience, participants will explore the collective and care-based structure of Aboriginal matriarchy. Developed on Ngarluma and Yindjibarndi country with women from Ieramugadu (Roebourne) community, Punkaliyarra is a long-term gender justice project produced by Big hART, a leading arts and social change organisation.

Punkaliyarra allows audiences to see, hear and feel the foundational concepts of matriarchal power, and to draw their own conclusions. In this version, designed specifically for All About Women, each participant is given a swag at the start of their session to settle in and experience firsthand the change-making power of Aboriginal matriarchal leadership. An opportunity to radically rethink power, audiences are invited to discover a deeper understanding of traditional knowledge systems held sacred by the women of this community.
